Infantry
The majority of the militia are designated as Musket-men, entrusted with the revered responsibility of carrying reproductions of historic firearms, such as the English Brown Bess or the 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Rifles. During parades and solemn events, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the Guards honor tradition by firing salutes with black powder blanks as they march in procession. As members of the Rhode Island Historic Militia, we partake in an annual live-fire qualification and competition at a local gun range, striving to earn the distinction of state shooting badges. Even when wielding smoothbore muskets—renowned for their lack of precision—the Kentish Guards consistently vie for the esteemed Governor’s Cup, a testament to our dedication and skill. The sound of musket fire is a cherished moment in every parade, with spectators often eager to witness the tradition and rallying behind us in enthusiastic support.
